9/16/09 Dockworkers, port workers to go on strike from September 15. Talks have failed after two and half years of negotiations. Dockworkers contract ended January 1, 2007

5/18/09 21-day strike by the Marine Department workers of Cochin Port Trust against job cuts was called off after talks between the port management and trade unions.

5/12/09  Cochin, Kerala, State government will act as a mediator between the central government and Cochin Port workers over workers fears of loosing jobs due to new manning policy and deployment of workers over several departments.  This reduction of  manning scale (new term, not used to that one yet, leaves strange taste in my mouth.  Focus) will solve personnel shortages in different categories, ultimately reducing the cost of running the port.  Policy in effect at Vizag (Andhra Pradesh) and Paradip (Orissa) already.

Cochin Port Samrakshana Samithi, is an organization that is spearheading the agitation

Port attendance Tuesday around 20 percent. Indefinite strike at the port on Wednesday. Seven out of eight trade unions, representing around 3,500 employees, are taking part in the strike.  Jobs may not be lost but over time will be.

9 March, 09  Both sides have decided to stay in talks. No strike, postponed only. Another meeting due 31 March, 2009 or before.

7 March, 09 union shipping ministry and central labour commissioner have called 12 representatives of 5 major port federations for discussion on 9 March at New Delhi. Again, that's after 26 months, 16 rounds of discussions.  Management is offering 18.5 percent wage hike over ten years!  Unions looking for 35 percent.

The WTWFI Secretary said there was no justification in offering only 18.5 per cent of wage hike for a period of ten years as against the demand of the five federations of 35 per cent for a period of five years.

2/24/2009 India, nationwide  Port workers to strike on Tuesday,10 March, 2009.  Port and dockworkers plan to strike for a 35 percent wage increase over five years.  Port management offering 18.5 percent.
